We went to see the house yesterday, and it’s very nice but we didn’t like the neighborhood at ALL. It’s further out than they led us to believe, for one thing, and it’s also in the middle of nowhere. The nearest town is… run down, I think I’ll call it. Not a place I want to be left alone for 6 to 9 month chunks of time.
Anyway, we’re going to talk to the housing people tomorrow (Monday) and see if we can have other options. I don’t see why they wouldn’t let us, except that availability is usually slim pickings.
Yesterday afternoon we went to Waikiki and walked around for a couple of hours. We started at the Army Museum (it has tanks outside!) and walked the beach down to the Royal Hawaiian (that famous pink hotel). I would like to share that the beach at Waikiki is maybe 40 feet at its widest, and at some places only about 5 feet wide, and at some they have concrete walls to keep the buildings from falling into the ocean. The water is gorgeous, however, and it was nice to be outside for a change. I’ve been in the hotel or car entirely too much.
After walking the beach, we came back down the main shopping street, which is mostly closed to traffic. They had all sorts of shops, and it reminded me of the shopping areas in Italy– Prada and Gucci and Louis Vuitton all in a row along with the tourist traps selling floral print shirts.
Honolulu looks just like pictures and movies of southern California. It makes me think that people moved from there to here and just recreated it. There are a lot of flowering trees I’ve never seen anywhere else, though, which is really nice. While prices are a little higher than I’m used to, it’s not nearly as bad as I was led to believe. Maybe because I came from a high cost of living area, it’s not a big shock?
I’m still trying to find a way to embed my photos here (without doing it individually..), but check out my photo blog (linked at the top of the page) for the latest pictures!
